In the early morning hours after St. Patrick’s Day, 1990, two men disguised as policemen gain access to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, a stately four-story Italian mansion in the Fenway district of Boston. They handcuff the guards, wrap their mouths with duct tape, and proceed to commit the largest robbery in history. The stolen masterpieces, including Vermeer’s The Concert, a Degas, a Manet, and three irreplaceable Rembrandts, are valued at half a billion dollars. Despite a $10 million reward, and the combined efforts of the FBI, Scotland Yard, INTERPOL, and the Canadian Mounted Police, the treasured art is never recovered.
Jump to twenty-five years later. Paris, an ex-con classics professor and superbly gifted art forger, is passing the time at a self-storage facility he bought in out-of-the-way New Mexico to earn a living while figuring out what to do next with his life. When a suspicious out-of-towner arrives to check on his belongings, Paris’ curiosity gets the best of him. He breaks into the man’s storage unit only to find the stolen art now missing for a quarter of a century. With the $10 million in reward money under his belt, Paris sets off for Boston to fulfill his dream of building a classical museum of his own. In order to help the eccentric Lieutenant Lowell nab the illusive thief, Paris dives back into the world of obsession and deception which may send him back to prison.
The Museum Heist, based on the real-life robbery of the famed Gardner Museum, is a fast-paced, wily whodunit filled with intrigue, romance and stimulating scholarship.
Author Kameel Nasr, an international adventurer and art connoisseur, shines a penetrating light on the motives, habits, and sometimes less-than-noble intentions in the demi-monde of world-class art collecting. Along the way, he’s created a wonderfully satisfying mystery novel for anyone interested in historical fiction. The Museum Heist takes you on a roller-coaster ride of suspense, a meticulous portrait of the underbelly of the art world at its highest echelons.

THE MUSEUM HEIST is thoroughly enjoyable--well written, intricately plotted, with deftly and economically delineated characters. For anyone familiar with the Boston area and in particular the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, there will be many recognizable scenes. The narrative moves fluidly among different layers of history--ancient Greece (and Magna Graecia) as intimately known by a classical scholar, the more recent history of the actual (and I believe still unresolved) museum heist with a fictive overlay, and a tender and tasteful romance in present time. The story is punctuated by unexpected turns of events and moments of danger, providing enough suspense to make readers hold their breath as complex and dark motivations unfold. The subtle cadences of Kameel Nasr's prose are laced with ironic reflections on human existence, adding depth to the telling. As the characters are buffeted by fate (and the fates in the person of others), will art and love prevail?Product details

The Museum Heist A Tale of Art and Obsession edition by Kameel Nasr Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
A fun romp of a read!
If you enjoy mysteries, art, and learning something new this book is for you. Set primarily in Boston, it provides a fictionalized backstory and resolution to the real Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum heist which occurred in 1990. Readers familiar with Boston will appreciate the local references. Very enjoyable!
This is a good art mystery. I wish I knew my Greek history better to follow the Paris character. Everyone was believable. Well written.
"The Museum Heist" is a fascinating and brilliantly researched historical novel involving the very famous, still unsolved Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum heist that took place in Boston in 1990. It is a great romp of an adventure, with wonderfully eccentric characters inhabiting the subterranean and sometimes dangerous international art world that few of us are aware of.... You will come away from this intriguing mystery not only entertained and educated but also, at the oddest moments, finding yourself making up your own story of what might have occurred regarding the actual heist and, like a child, fantasizing what exactly you might do with the hefty reward~ Great fun to enter Nasr's world!
I rarely read mystery books, but The Museum Heist caught my eye when it popped up on my screen both because I had greatly enjoyed The World Up Close, an wonderful travelogue written by the same author, and also because I am a great fan of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, still saddened when I see the empty frames of the Rembrandt and Vermeer paintings stolen in the well-known and yet unsolved theft more than 25 years ago. So, I bought this book to pass the time on an upcoming cross-country flight. A good decision! The Museum Heist intertwines a clever ‘who-done-it’ story line with interesting and amusing characters, like the wayward academic, who is the protagonist, and the good-hearted, hypochondriac cop. There is also an informative exposition on the philosophy and art of ancient Greece. Yes, the paintings stolen from the Gardner museum in the unsolved mystery were mostly renaissance art, with nothing from ancient Greece. But, poetic license weaves interesting accounts of Pythagoras into this story. Boston references are also fun, especially for those who know the city. I heartily recommend the Museum Heist and hope to see more coming from this author.
This is a great book all around. It is comical, suspenseful and fun to read. I loved the easy flow and the mystery that unfolds. The surprises and events are most intriguing and pull the reader in. Paris is an engaging character, with a bizarre thought process. But he is cunning and smart. When he teams up with Lieutenant Lowell, who is as bizarre as he is, the fun begins. The story line is intense and fast paced and kept my attention. The details are outstanding, especially in covering the art and made it very real. I like this author and am going to be looking for more of his work. He really brings his words to life. If you like mysteries and suspense novels, with a pinch of humor, this is the book for you. Read it, love it and enjoy. It is a great read, and I strongly recommend it.
Nasr is an established non-fiction author who meticulously researches history, and backs up his claims with evidence and documentation. He brings his attention to detail to this fun fictional romp. Paris, the main character has a bit of larceny in his past, and major obsessions in his present, but a desire to do the right thing after finding stolen artwork. A police detective with his own (alimentary canal) obsessions may (or may not) believe him -- and may be setting him up. A new twist on the odd couple. A fun read...perfect for the summer beach bag.
